Candle Safety
Candles are safe when burned properly, responsibly, and according to manufacturers' directions. When burning candles, consumers should always follow these basic safety rules:
Lighted candles should always be within sight. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Many candles smell so good, and some of them even look like a food product, so make sure kids don't mistake them! Watch for wagging tails near a flame, too.
Read and follow all manufacturer instructions carefully. Burn 1 hour for each 1 inch width of the container candle.
Trim the wick to ¼ inch prior to each use and keep trimmed to ¼ inch to prevent smoke and soot damage to your home.
Always use an appropriate candleholder placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Place trivet or protective covering underneath holder to protect furniture.
Keep burning candles away from drafts. This includes air and heat vents, open doors and windows, and people traffic. A draft may cause the wick or flame to draw too near to the sides and may fracture the glass.
Extinguish a candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly, or the flame becomes too high. Cool, trim wick, check for drafts, and re-light.
Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.
Do not burn a candle for longer than the manufacturer recommends.
Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room.
Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 1 inch of wax remains (1/2 inch if in a container).
Never touch or move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid.
Extinguish pillar candles if the wax pool approaches the outer edge.
UNever leave a candle burning while you sleep! This is a HUGE CAUSE OF HOUSE FIRES!
Do not burn candle without ample overhead clearance, too close to a wall, near combustible materials, near dry greenery, draperies, sheers, lampshades, garments, or in an enclosed area.
Inspect your candle container before each use. If you find a chip or crack, discard it. If a match is accidentally dropped into a candle, extinguish the candle and when it is cool, remove the match. If this is not done, the flame could burn away from the center creating a hazard.
Discontinue use of a container candle when 1/2 inch of wax remains. Discontinue use of a pillar when 1 inch of wax remains.
Let a container candle burn for at least 1 hour for each inch of diameter that your candle is. (ex. 2in. diameter let it burn for 2 hours.) and so on. This helps your candle to create a melt pool all the way across the top of the container so that your candle burns evenly and straight down the sides of your container . Your candle has a memory and the first time you burn it, sets the memory of that candle.. hence if you burn a 3 in. diameter candle for 1 hour without achieving a successful melt pool all the way across the top of the jar then the next time you light that candle it's only going to burn to where it stopped the first time.. This causes your candle to tunnel straight down the center. If you don't have time to let the candle burn for the proper amount of time the first time you light it then, don't light it.! You will be more pleased with your candle if you burn it properly.
Place votives in a snug fitting container before burning as they tend to liquefy.
Let a pillar candle burn only long enough to melt it to the outer edge of the candle then put it out. This will train your candle to burn straight down the center and leave the outer edge to form a wall to hold the melted wax. It's sort of opposite to the container candles. Always set a pillar candle in a candle dish or some other container to prevent the wax from getting on countertops or furniture.
For Soy Candles keep the wick trimmed to 1/8 inch to prevent smoking and carbon mushrooming. Re-trim every 3 to 4 hours as the candle burns.
Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.
One of the safest ways to extinguish a candle is to use a candle snuffer. It helps prevent hot wax from spattering.
Do not extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to spatter and can cause glass containers to break.
Never use a candle for light when you go into a closet to look for things.
Never use a candle for light when fueling equipment such as a lantern or kerosene heater.
Avoid placing your candle in direct sunlight, as it may cause discoloration of your candle.
